Sxcoal Issue #1 | Latest weekly survey on China's thermal and coking coal mines
This is a special issue primarily focusin on our latest weekly survey on China's thermal and coking coal producers. We hope it provide useful insights into the status quo of the Chinese coal sector.
Thermal coal
Over the week ending December 7, capacity utilization of the 100 thermal coal mines surveyed by Sxcoal in Shanxi, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia ticked up by 0.34 pp WoW to 93.75%.
Upward strength of the mine-mouth markets was not strong, as end buyers mostly adopted on-demand purchases. Of the surveyed mines, 19% raised prices by 63.7 yuan/t on average, while 10% mines cut prices by 60.1 yuan/t.
Coking coal
Active purchases supported coking coal prices in China's major production areas. Only 1 of the 88 surveyed mines cut prices by 50 yuan/t, while 30 mines raised prices by 110 yuan/t averagely.
With gradual easing of COVID restrictions, capacity utilization of these mines increased by 0.46 pp WoW to 90.72%. Both raw and washed coking coal output grew moderately, but their stocks declined, reflecting improved demand from coking plants.
